McCain - Palin 2008

So McCain has finally chosen a pick for the VP spot. And it's a horrible choice.

Sarah Palin was a mayor of a small town less than 20 months ago, and now McCain has chosen her for VP when it tears apart his argument against Obama. McCain has repeatedly said that Obama is too inexperienced to be our country's president, yet now he has chosen an extremely inexperienced person to take his place as the leader of this country if he was to die. And keep in mind that McCain (if elected) will be our country's oldest president to ever be elected, which puts his chance of not being able to run the country much higher than it would be if he were younger.

I'm also not very happy with the gist of why McCain chose Palin: to catch Hillary supporters. He might say he trusts Palin, and thinks she'll help the nation, but what are the chances that he would chose a woman to be VP in this election? It echos the point that Obama made in his speech at the convention, that McCain just "doesn't get it". The election shouldn't be about playing to peoples emotions or prejudices, it should be about showing who you are and why the people should elect you.

You should practice what you preach, I'm afraid McCain didn't do that here.

And Obama does practice what he preaches? And he really makes it about why he should be elected? Somehow I'm not convinced.

Now I'm not sayng that the way politics works today is good, but that's just the way it is. The truth is that noone is innocent of that. Obama, for instance, pulls the race card 24/7, and then McCain mentions Obama using the race card card, and the media has a feeding frenzy.

But really I think it's all irrelevent. I, for one, ignore most of the attack adds and the "look, I'm a nicer campaigner than the other guy," speeches and the "we need change" slogans. I actually look at what they do and how they've voted. And I think a lot more people are like that than really take that stuff seriously.

Sure she might have good ideals but is she experienced enough to be number two in line to the white house?

My friends and I have personally discussed this issue a bit. Personally, I think it ties into her gender. While the Dems have a black man and woman, the Reps have nothing new to offer except for old white guys.

Yeah, Al Sharpton doesn't even like him. There was an internet poll among african americans asking whether they thought Obama was a brother, and they were decidedly against the idea. I thought it was really funny.

But my real issue is that even if he was black, as the first black president he sets the bar for all future black presidents. Because of this the first has to be the best. I don't think he can be the best, even if I did agree with his politics. (Personally I'd rather see Walter Williams as the first black president. Really, I'd just like to see him as president.)

With that choice McCain has shown to everyone how far he is a maverick and an free-minded person. Let's see if this is gonna help me in the election or not...

Oh, I think it worked very well. Evangelicals like her, and some feminists like her.

Both in the media and among evangelicals I know (which is a lot, includig several influential conservative Christian thinkers) that has little bearing. Whether it should or not is something else, but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference from what I'e seen.
